Ghana - gateway to West Africa (with population of about 419 million people as of 2021) - like the majority of countries of the Sub - Saharan Africa which depends on just four products viz tea, cocoa, coffee and timber for more than 50% of their export earnings also depend mainly on cocoa, timber and precious metals.
The unstable and sometimes plummeting commodity prices combined with high cost of production and soaring interest rates have led to severe debt servicing problems for these countries . To address such distortion in the economy a major policy objective of the World Bank supported Economy Recovery Programme (ERP) has been to break away from the over dependence on a few primary exports commodities and to diversify the export base into non- traditional products so as to encourage an export led growth strategy for the economy
The potential for growth in the non - traditional sub sector is enormous considering the demand and price on the commodity market and more importantly the opportunities for value addition through agro - industrialization.
